What is UPSC?
UPSC is a department of the Department of Personnel and Training. The primary objective of the commission is to select competent officers and servants for the Central Civil Services (Group A & Group B) or any of the employment-related posts, under the Government of India and the State Governments in their respective jurisdictions. In exercise of its functions, the commission deals with administrative appointments such as the officer or servants for the posts of the Executive Director or Principal Finance Officer, and the Departmental Accounts Officer or Senior Accounts Officer in the Ministry of Finance and Deputy Director-General and Director (Resource Management & Scheduling) in the Ministry of Finance. The commission has a wide role to play in the administrative matters of India.
The Role of UPSC in India
UPSC, as we know is a job-oriented organization. It has around 19000 vacancies out of which almost 4100 vacancies are in the Science stream. Other Science streams such as Bio-Medical Engineering and Biological Sciences have also a few openings. The recruits are posted at various important government bodies. The central government is one such important body. Besides government bodies, it is also an organization for which individuals apply. Its main job is to conduct civil services exams in India which is the most competitive and important of its kind. The civil services exam is a tri-partite examination conducted by the UPSC. 20 different competitive examinations are conducted by the UPSC.
The UPSC is a semi-autonomous body, responsible for the administration of civil recruitment examinations (like Civil Services, Engineering Services, Medical Services, etc.). Conduct of Examination The UPSC has to conduct two types of examinations every year – Central Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS). Exam Date The UPSC conducts the examination once every year. However, the results of the examinations are available only once a year. It usually takes a month for the result to be declared. Eligibility Criteria for Applicants All the candidates who wish to apply for the recruitment must have cleared a matriculation/board exam. Age Limit A candidate should not be older than 20 years as of December 1.

The UPSC conducts tests and interviews to hire the staff for its various government agencies and organizations. The Commission evaluates the aptitude of candidates by following the rules and regulations, according to which it accepts applications for Assistant Manager (Finance), Officer on Special Duty (Transport), etc., vacancies on its official website, upsc.gov.in.
